Getting Consistent Readings at Home
Most variation in home measurements comes from how and when you measure, not from the device. Consistency is the cheapest upgrade.
Same time, same conditions
- Measure at the same time of day, for example first thing in the morning.
- Use similar clothing, or none, each time.
- Measure before eating and exercising, if that suits your routine.
Placement
Put a scale on a hard, level floor. Carpet and uneven tiles can distort readings. If you move the scale, some models need a moment to recalibrate; step on and off once first.
Look at the trend
Day-to-day changes are mostly noise. A weekly average or the app's trend line says far more than any single morning.
Check the device occasionally
Weigh a known object, such as a sealed bag of flour, every few months. If the scale drifts, change the batteries before blaming the sensors.
Write down context
A note such as "late dinner" or "long run yesterday" explains most surprising readings when you look back.
