Bluetooth Pairing Basics for Health Gadgets

Scales, cuffs and trackers talk to your phone over Bluetooth. When syncing fails, the fix is usually simple once you know how the connection works.

The technology

Most health gadgets use Bluetooth Low Energy, a wireless technology designed for small devices that need to run for a long time on small batteries, including healthcare and fitness devices.

Pair through the app

Many health devices are paired from inside the manufacturer's app, not from the phone's Bluetooth settings. Pairing in the wrong place is a common reason a device "connects" but never syncs.

When syncing fails

  1. Check the device battery.
  2. Make sure the app has Bluetooth and, where required, location permission.
  3. Close and reopen the app; keep the phone near the device.
  4. Remove the device in the app and pair again.
  5. Check for app and firmware updates.

Several people, one device

Shared scales identify users by profile or by recent weight. If two people weigh about the same, readings can land in the wrong profile; most apps let you reassign them.

Keep firmware updated

Updates fix bugs and security issues. Install them from the official app only.
